Changes in your contractual hours
We have a series of fact sheets which tell you about how your premium pension benefits are affected if you change the number of hours you work or take leave other than annual and flexi leave.
- CWP1 - How your pension is worked out
- CWP2 - part time, term time and seasonal working
- CWP3 - Flexible and shift working
- CWP4 - Career breaks
- CWP5 - Special leave, maternity, paternity and adoption leave, parental leave and time off for dependants
Marriage, civil partnerships, cohabiting and dissolution
If you get married or enter into a civil partnership, you should tell your employer.
You must also complete a new death benefit nomination form if you wish to nominate your spouse or civil partner to receive benefits in the event of your death.
If you are living with someone but are not married or in a civil partnership with them (or with anyone else), it is possible to provide for your partner to receive benefits in the event of your death. For your partner to be entitled to these benefits, you must complete a joint declaration. See the booklet Pensions for partners for more information.
If you are going through a divorce, dissolution or annulment, see the booklet Pensions and divorce, dissolution or annulment. If you have nominated your husband, wife or civil partner and the marriage/civil partnership comes to an end (through divorce/dissolution but not separation), the nomination will no longer be valid. You must therefore make a new nomination.
To revoke a nomination, please complete the Death benefit revocation form for classic plus, nuvos, partnership, premium and send it to your pensions administrator.
Partial retirement
Partial retirement allows you, with the agreement of your employer, to draw some or all of your premium pension and remain in work. Your employer has to consider the needs of the business first so you will not have an automatic right to partial retirement. And you must be prepared to have your job reshaped to reduce your earnings by at least 20%. To find out more, see the booklet Partial retirement – a guide for scheme members.*
The partial retirement calculator* (for classic, premium and classic plus members) will help you understand how partial retirement will affect your income now and when you finally retire.
You need to be aware that your pension could be reduced if you take partial retirement. The leaflet What is abatement?* tells you more.
* Booklets and leaflets are also available from your pensions administrator – see under Pensions helpline for contact details.

On loan
If you go on loan to another organisation that offers Civil Service pensions to its staff, you will remain in premium. However, the employer you are on loan to may use a different pensions administrator. If this is the case, your old administrator will pass your pension record onto your new administrator but you may like to contact your new pensions administrator to confirm that they have received your details.
Secondment
If you are seconded to an organisation that doesn’t participate in the Civil Service pension arrangements, you must talk to your employer before your secondment starts so that you understand your pension options.
Transferring to another employer who is part of the Civil Service pensions arrangements
If you transfer to another employer who is part of the Civil Service pensions arrangements, with no break in service, you will remain in premium. However, your new employer may use a different pensions administrator. If this is the case, your old administrator will pass your pension record onto your new administrator but you may like to contact your new pensions administrator to confirm that they have received your details.
