On 8th March 2012 the Department for Transport held a Civil Service-wide event (in conjunction with BIS) to mark International Women’s Day.
With the Olympics only months away, the theme for the day was “Faster, Higher, Stronger” (the Olympic motto). The day was divided into two separate sessions: the morning session focussed on personal and professional development while the afternoon focussed on leadership. During the day, we debated issues such as why there are so few women on boards but also the enormous progress women have made over the last few decades, finishing with a demonstration of this in practice with a session with 4 female permanent secretaries answering questions from the floor.
A number of high profile speakers, both from within the Civil Service and from outside, attended the event and we have posted transcripts of some of their speeches on this site.
The event was a real success and we are delighted to have been given the chance to organise it. HMRC have agreed to organise a similar event in 2013 and we wish them all the best with it.
