Richard Douglas is Head of the Government Finance Profession. Our community comprises of over 9,000 Finance Professionals, split equally between trainee and fully qualified accountants. It is the largest professional grouping in central government.
Finance Professionals play a critical role in delivering cost effective public services by driving forward strong financial management and putting finance at the centre of decision making within their organisations. The need for professionally qualified, highly skilled, financially literate policy makers and leaders, across the Civil Service is therefore, increasingly important.
The government is committed to “strengthening financial discipline”. This has two key strands:
- increasing the financial awareness of non-finance staff, and
- developing the finance community
The Government Finance Profession is a dynamic profession and the demand for qualified professionals is increasing across the whole of government and the wider public service.
The Office of Government Finance Profession
The Office of the Government Finance Professionalism Team in HM Treasury supports Richard Douglas, Head of the Government Finance Profession, in embedding the professional finance culture across government.
The Office of the Government Finance Profession currently maintains a website in association with their business partners at www.thegfp-treasury.org. This website enables members to keep up to date on news and initiatives concerning the Government Finance Profession as well as letting them know about some of the latest job opportunities, conference details and other networking events.

Recruitment
All departments are responsible for the direct recruitment of their own Finance Professionals and should be contacted directly. However, those interested in careers in finance might like to note:
- The Government Finance Profession run an annual Graduate Financial Management Development Recruitment Scheme. Applications for the scheme normally open in the autumn.
- The Government Finance Profession offers Fast Streamers an opportunity to study for a professional accountancy qualification while undertaking their normal Fast Stream development through the Fast Stream Finance Option.
