Sandwich student placements are aimed at economics students who are seriously considering a career in the Government Economic Service (GES) after graduation. The placements last for approximately one year. Salaries payable vary from Department to Department. The majority of posts are located in London, with a few based in the regions.

The centrally run GES sandwich student scheme 2011-12 is likely to open for applications on Monday 11 October. The latest closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 22 October. The scheme will close before the latest closing date when a sufficient number of applications have been received, and this will be notified on the GES website. It is therefore in your interest to submit your application as soon as possible after the opening date. Applications submitted after the scheme has closed will not be accepted.
The template application form is posted below, so that you can prepare over the summer. We will not accept applications before the opening date for the scheme. The final application form, including space for Departmental preferences, will be published when the scheme opens. Please read the Recruitment Process and Guidance section before you apply.
Please note that there may be fewer vacancies available than in previous years. If there are insufficient vacancies, the scheme will not run.

Individual job descriptions and salary details for the 2011-12 sandwich student scheme will be published on the GES website in mid-September.
Applicants successful at the sift stage are advised that they will not always receive their highest preference of Department. Occasionally, a Department might withdraw from the scheme before placements are offered. In such cases, applicants allocated to that department will be placed in a reserve pool of candidates.
To be eligible applicants must be studying for a degree in economics or a joint degree where economics comprises at least 50% of the total course. They must also be on course for a 2:1 or 1st class degree. Further information on eligibility requirements and completing the application form can be found in the Recruitment Process and Guidance section. You must read this before completing your application.
Candidates who are successful at the sift stage will be invited for interview at one of the participating Departments. Interviews are likely to take place in November/December 2010.
The Civil Service is an Equal Opportunities employer. Candidates with disabilities (as defined in the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act) can choose to declare on their application form that they require adjustments at interview, for which we can make a range of provisions. Please do contact us should you have any questions regarding this – we would be happy to help.
We are interested in your skills and aptitudes. We have no preferences for particular backgrounds or universities. We want to reflect the diversity of the country we serve.
