A career in economics can touch on virtually any aspect of life and business. Being a government economist in the Government Economic Service isn't just a question of analysing figures.
It's work that sees you closely involved in important current issues and helping shape government policy. From providing data to help alleviate child poverty to appraising new transport schemes your work will affect the daily lives of millions of people. Indeed, the key role played by economists in most government departments emphasises the importance attached to economic advice throughout the Civil Service.
If you are interested in a career as a government economist, attending a GES Open Day will provide you with more information about the fast stream recruitment process and give you the opportunity to speak to economists from a wide range of departments.
We will be organising the following event in spring 2010:
GES Open Day in London – Friday, 5 March 2010

The GES Open Day eventswill be open to 2nd and final year students who expect to get a 1st or a 2:1 in economics or a mixed degree where at least 50% of the modules taken are in economics and who are interested in applying to join the GES. The events are also open to students on economics masters courses.
As well as UK citizens we recruit Commonwealth citizens, Swiss nationals and nationals of the European Economic Area (which includes people from member states of the European Union and the European Free Trade Area). Students who are not UK, EEA or Commonwealth nationals will not met the nationality requirements for the GES recruitment schemes so, to avoid disappointment, should not register for the Open Day event.
The deadline for registration is Friday, 27 February.
An accurate list of those attending each event is essential for security purposes. Regrettably, students who are not on the guest list will not be admitted.
If you have problems registering for this event, please contact the Government Economic Service Team on 020 7 270 4571/5073.
