Profile: Jonathan Males

Jonathan established Performance1 in 2000, drawing on his rich experience at the very highest levels of sport; he represented Australia at four World Canoeing Championships, coached Olympic medal winners on the Australian and British teams, and was the Great Britain Olympic Team’s HQ sport psychologist in Athens in 2004.

With a first class degree in psychology from the University of Tasmania and then post graduate research at the University of Nottingham he is a world authority in the field of reversal theory, a comprehensive framework for understanding the relationship between performance, motivation and emotion.

Since 1993 he has been a consultant to a wide range of public and private sector organisations in the UK, the US and Australia. Assignments include building and integrating multi-cultural teams on complex engineering and construction projects, advising on improvements in a FTSE10 executive team’s effectiveness, guiding a FTSE 100 Finance Director through the transition to CEO, and developing a programme to fast track the next generation of sport scientists and coaches in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.

Jonathan brings a fresh and deep approach to his work with leaders and their organisations. Recognising that successful leadership can rarely be reduced to a check-list of actions and objectives, he draws on a sophisticated understanding of leadership, human development and business dynamics to help his clients create and navigate a meaningful map of their complex and evolving world.

As a facilitator and coach, Jonathan brings a calm and robust presence to any situation. His willingness and ability to “say the unsayable” quickly gets to the heart of a topic and enables individuals and teams to productively confront, explore and re-frame the issues that hold them back. The result is often transformational.

Among his clients: the British Olympic Association; the engineering firm MW Kellogg; the Environment Agency; the National School for Government; Friends Provident; and Brighton and Hove Council. He also works with the Benedictine Centre for Spirituality in Cockfosters.
