Profile: Dr Ian Stewart
Ian Stewart has taught at Sandhurst since 1989 - although between 2001 and 2006 he worked in MOD Whitehall in Corporate Communications and Public Relations.
In his current post he is responsible for ensuring that the Department is properly focussed on developing the relevant knowledge and skills that young officers need, and that the course is sufficiently challenging and academically rigorous.
Ian holds a first class degree in English and Sociology, as well as a postgraduate degree in Linguistics. His Masters research was in curriculum and syllabus design. His PhD thesis examined the use of public relations and propaganda materials in influencing publics.
At MOD, Ian was head of Media Training and oversaw the development of media training packages for both military and civilian personnel at all ranks and helped establish the Defence Media Operations Centre. Later, as Assistant Director Corporate Identity, he developed measures of Reputation for the MOD and worked on a range of branding and licensing issues.
In addition to his work at Sandhurst, he acts as a consultant in his areas of interest for a range of commercial and public service organisations. He also teaches a course in Social Science for the Open University.
