Fast Stream Statisticians develop their expertise by undertaking a series of postings in a range of government departments or agencies and sometimes even overseas.
These postings, usually lasting between 12 and 18 months, will help you sharpen your technical, managerial and statistical communication skills. At the same time, you’ll be receiving guidance and mentoring from a manager who will give you regular feedback on your performance. Most departments also offer financial assistance for you to pursue external qualifications.

In the longer term, your progress will depend on your performance. Promotion is competitive, and there are no guarantees. That said, we would expect you to advance to full Statistician status within four to six years (sooner if you’re very well qualifi ed or have relevant experience under your belt). After that, you’ll be able to apply for senior Civil Service posts.
A Fast Stream career does not have to mean London. Equally challenging opportunities are available in other parts of the country and offer a unique perspective which London-based Fast Streamers do not see. Even those in London are expected to be mobile and work wherever their departments need them.
