Step-by-Step Application Process

The Graduate Fast Stream (GFS) encompasses various options for the Civil Service and, whilst we've detailed each of these options, you may find it useful to see an overview.

The application process

1. REGISTRATION

2. SELECTION OF FAST STREAM SCHEMES
Once you have selected the Fast Stream scheme/s you wish to apply for, you will have a specific number of days to complete each stage described below.  You will be notified of your completion date for your online tests on your "My Applications" page in the password protected area of the site.  The number of days in brackets below indicates the time allocated to that part of the process.  If you need an extension of a completion date for genuine reasons, it is essential you contact the Fast Stream Helpdesk on 01276 400333 or send a message via the candidate web site.   The time frame for each stage is set once you have completed the preceding stage; any unused time is not carried forward. 

3.  ONLINE SELF-ASSESSMENT TESTS (7 days)
These tests have been designed to help you assess your own performance and rates your chances of success in stage 5.  - Verbal and Numerical Reasoning

4.  ONLINE PRACTICE TESTS  (7 days)
These practice tests will give you an opportunity to try out the type of tests that you'll have to pass in the next stage of the application process.  Whilst the practice is optional, we strongly commend the opportunity to you and further guidance on taking tests is available here.

5.  ON-LINE SELECTION TESTS  (7 days)
The results of these tests are the only ones used to determine if you will progress to the next stage: 
     - Verbal Reasoning
     - Numerical Reasoning
     - Competency Questionnaire

6.  OPTIONS SELECTION (7 days) and e-APPLICATION FORM (7 days)

7.  SUPERVISED E-TRAY EXERCISE (½ day at a regional centre)*
    - Numerical and Verbal Reasoning re-test
    - E-Tray Exercise
If you are unfamiliar with e-Tray exercises, an example e-Tray exercise is provided.

8.  ONE-DAY ASSESSMENT CENTRE (London)*
Candidates invited to the assessment centre will be sent a booklet outlining the day and containing example tests. The Assessment Centre guide is also available online.

9.  FINAL SELECTION BOARD*
For some of the Graduate Fast Stream options, there is a Final Selection Board:
    - Diplomatic Service
    - Houses of Parliament

* Please be aware that your invitation to these stages of the selection process depends on passing the preceding stages.
