Clerks are senior officials of the House of Commons or the House of Lords. While the term “clerk” is of medieval origin, it describes a vital role in our 21st-century Parliament. Clerks provide advice and assistance to Members of both houses in their Parliamentary functions through the legislative process, by raising matters of current concern in debate, or by scrutinising the policies and actions of Ministers through the Select Committees.
It’s an excellent and rewarding career choice for people who want to experience the excitement of the parliamentary process without engaging in the cut and thrust of politics.
