The programmes are generally between 6-9 weeks within a government department with an allocated Fast Stream buddy and a line manager overseeing the experience. Most interns start their placements at the end of June. Departments will be responsible for ensuring that you attend an induction session in your first week which will provide you with a good overview of the department you are placed in, the people who you will be working with and areas of work you are likely to be involved in.

Around that time, you will be invited to a Corporate Welcoming Reception which will give you an overview of the programme and what to expect over the two months. You will also have an opportunity to meet with the Head of the Civil Service, Sir Gus O’Donnell, other senior civil servants, line managers, Fast Streamers, former interns and interns who, like you, have also been successful onto the programme. You will also be invited to a Closing Reception which takes place in September to celebrate the interns’ achievements on the programme.
During your internship placement, you will be placed into Fast Stream like posts where you will be involved in stretching and challenging project related work from research, supporting projects, assisting on policy documents, shadowing senior civil servants and attending critical meetings with senior advisors on major issues. It is important to remember that the internship is a fantastic opportunity for you to network and seek out opportunities where possible.
We, therefore, look for demonstrable team working skills, innovation and creativity, and flexibility in working with people at varying levels and pace. In addition, you must demonstrate a real interest in wanting to pursue a career in the Civil Service.
