Summer Development Programme

The Summer Development Programme was established in 1999 to address concerns around the under representation of people for black and ethnic minority background in the Senior Civil Service. Interns are offered 6-9 weeks full time placements in various Government Departments to gain a more thorough understanding of the type of work Fast Streamers do in the Civil Service.

The Summer Development Programme offers development opportunities in a range of different Government Departments, so some of the training will depend on the particular business needs of the individual department. If you have specific areas of interest, we will ensure that you are placed within a relevant government department that will give you the exposure and insight. Whichever department you are placed in, we will ensure you receive good training and development.

By the end of the placements, interns discover a great deal about the role of the Civil Service, and about the relationships between Parliament and Civil Service departments. With a real insight of Civil Service work and training behind them, the intention is that interns are fairly equipped with the knowledge of what the Civil Service is about and an understanding of the role of Fast Streamers.  This will enable interns to feel confident and assured of their abilities to apply to the Fast Stream.

Interns will be paid a competitive training allowance by the employing government departments. Departments will not be able to provide funding for travel and accommodation, but they will try and assist (where possible) to find somewhere to stay, if required.

Please note that placements do not lead to permanent employment.
