Careers Events
Careers Fairs
Careers fairs are currently one of the most effective methods for recruiting graduates to the Fast Stream. They occur in spring and summer between April and July, and in the autumn between October and December. Visitors to a fair have a unique opportunity to speak directly to Civil Service employees about working in the Civil Service, their own personal experiences, applying to the Fast Stream and the selection process.
Dunchester's Millions (Civil Service role-play policy game)
Dunchester's Millions is a half-day policy game that illustrates many aspects of a career in the Civil Service. By playing the game, participants learn about how the government operates and in particular the role that civil servants play. The game also provides participants with a great opportunity to practise a range of skills including: effectiveness in meetings, persuasion and negotiation, interpersonal sensitivity, analysis, judgement, decision-making and innovation.
Dunchester is a fictitious town that has just received £20 million from the government for regeneration and participants have to work out how to spend the money, facing a few surprises on the way! A number of participants take the role of civil servants; some play Ministers, MPs and their advisers. Others will represent the sorts of organisations that influence the development of policy in government, particularly pressure groups, local authorities and the private sector.
Presentations
To promote the Fast Stream programme, the Fast Stream Marketing Team organises a programme of presentations with black and Asian societies across the country. It offers the opportunity for alumni to return to universities and share their invaluable experience with current undergraduates. There are still some common misconceptions about both the Civil Service and the Fast Stream and the best way of countering these is to hear from those who have been successful.
