I want to be a civil servant

Recruitment and equality

Recruitment to the Civil Service is through fair and open competition. All departments and agencies use competency-based systems, to ensure we select the best person for the job.

When applying for a role with the Civil Service, your age, disability, ethnic origin, gender, gender identity, religion/belief or sexual orientation is not taken into consideration.

Our vacancies are advertised on the Civil Service Recruitment Gateway website, as well as national and local newspapers.

Disabled applicants

All disabled applicants are guaranteed an interview if they meet the minimum criteria for the job. The minimum criteria are the main skills and competencies required, and these will be listed on the advertisement.

If you require reasonable adjustments for any interview, let us know. The recruiting manager will get in contact with you to discuss your needs.

We have introduced guidance for departments in support of this commitment, which you can download and read if you want to find out more.

In addition, the Recruitment section of the Civil Service 10-Point Plan on delivering a more diverse Civil Service ensures that departments and agencies build on this work.

Work/life balance

We want our employees to achieve a positive work/life balance. Most departments and agencies support this with:

  • flexible working systems
  • alternative working patterns, including: part-time, job-share, term time or compressed hours
