Civil Service Live
Profile: Sarah Wood
Sarah Wood - current Vice Chair of a:gender - is a career civil servant who is passionate about the cause of equality for transgender people.
Her work in this area began in 2001 with an informal group of colleagues, which slowly evolved into the HM Revenue & Customs Transgender Diversity Network, the only department to have network specifically for transgender people. Sarah is the network's driving force and she is proud to number among her achievements the HMRC policy on gender reassignment absence, which ranks as Best in Class.
HMRC formally recognised her work this year when Sarah was made an OBE for her diversity work. She is also active in a:gender, specialising in a number of areas, and is a regular presenter at the popular a:gender Open Events, designed to raise awareness of trans people and assist public authorities in fulfilling their legal duties, as well as pursuing full equality for the full range of transgender people.
