Religion or belief
As individuals we should value the skills and knowledge that people from different cultures bring to the workplace - and how this benefits us all.
What you can do
Show understanding:
- Remember the different value systems people of different genders, cultures and faiths will have.
- Learn to understand what others believe and value. Let them express this in their own terms; if you're unsure about anything, ask appropriate, relevant questions.
- Be careful never to impose your own ideals on other people.
- Respect another person's wish to be left alone, or not to join in certain activities.
Racial, cultural and ethnic identity is often closely related with religion or belief, and we should remember this when working with colleagues from different backgrounds.
Be discreet:
- Some of your colleagues may feel comfortable with others knowing about which faith they adhere to, others may be less open for fear of rejection, harassment or bullying.
- If someone talks to you about their religion or beliefs, but asks you to keep it confidential, it's important you do this.
