Caring - legislation

The 2006 Work and Families Act has extended the rights of those with caring responsibilities. These include the rights to flexible working and time off in emergencies.

The Act is a further step towards helping families balance their work and caring commitments. Its main provisions came into force in April 2007, and employees who are carers should familiarise themselves with the rights it gives them.

For further information about the Act, and other relevant legislation, visit your departmental internet sites and external organisations such as www.carersuk.org

In addition, employees have a legal right to take a reasonable amount of time off if there is an emergency involving one of their dependents. They can take enough time to deal with the immediate consequences, and make any necessary longer-term arrangements.
