Age - legislation

The guidelines on age are among the newest additions to the raft of equality and discrimination legislation.

In October 2006, a European Union directive (EU Employment and Race Directives Article 13) was introduced. It outlawed discrimination in the workplace on the basis of age - as well as other factors, including race, sex and religious beliefs.

The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 came into force at the same time. These prohibit unjustified discrimination against workers on the basis of age. This includes direct and indirect age discrimination, and any harassment or victimisation on the grounds of age. The laws and regulations apply to everyone - young or old.
