Civil Service Statistics 2004 annual report
In section navigation
Introduction
This 35th annual edition of Civil Service Statistics presents facts and figures on staffing in the Civil Service as at 1 April 2004.
This edition includes:
- A general commentary on trends and patterns in Civil Service employment;
- A series of tables showing the numbers of civil servants, where they work and how they are organised,
- Notes on definitions and sources and
- A selected bibliography
This web-only version of Civil Service Statistics is structured as a living website, in that extra tables and commentary will be added in the near future. Furthermore, the tables are published in such a way as to allow users the ability to download data for their own analysis requirements.
Where not otherwise indicated, figures refer to staff numbers on a full-time equivalent basis. However, many analyses count individuals on a headcount basis, particularly in the expanded section on diversity.
The Mandate database consists of data collected electronically from departments and agencies. Some departments and agencies are unable to supply data to Mandate for technical reasons, and provide summary tables instead.
A range of more detailed statistics about aspects of Civil Service employment, including further staffing statistics and statistics on diversity in the Civil Service, is published in other sections of this website: www.civilservice.gov.uk/management/statistics/.
