What skills do I need?

To make sure you have the right mix of skills and expertise for your role both now and in the future you can use the PSG competency framework.

This framework sets out the skills expertise you require in your current job and those you need to develop for your promotion. These will depend on your role and department, but include:

  • leadership (common to all civil servants)
  • core skills (common to all civil servants at your grade)
  • professional skills (which are specific to your profession and role)
  • broader experience (applies for SCS only)

For all grades – skills identifier tool

Government Skills has redeveloped the PSG skills identifier tool to make sure that it includes the latest content, including the extension of the framework to civil service roles at all grades.

Skills assessment for Grade 7 and SCS pay bands 1 and 3

If you are at Grade 7 or SCS pay bands 1 and 3, you can assess yourself in detail against all four strands of the PSG competency framework by using the online PSG assessment tool.

You can refer to the guidance if you want more information on using this self-assessment tool.

You can use the results from this tool to discuss any skills gaps with your manager, and ask other relevant people for feedback on your performance.
