How do I develop my skills?

If you have identified the specific skills you need, the next step is to work out what kind of development is best for you.

Sometimes you can demonstrate that you have a skill while doing your job. If this is not possible, then a large range of learning and development opportunities can help you fill a skills gap.

From the following pages you can find out more about the many options offered by the National School of Government.

The page below has information on developing your professional skills and also gives links to professions websites.

For other information and advice on the range of options open to you, it is worth checking the learning and development pages on your department’s intranet.

You can also talk about your different development opportunities with:

  • your manager
  • a member of your department’s learning and development team
  • someone in your professional network
