Who we are
Since the 1 April 2011, the National School of Government re-joined the Cabinet Office, and ceased to be a non ministerial department. Our core function hasn’t changed. We continue to deliver a wide range of learning services, primarily for the Civil Service. We also reach across the wider public sector from the leadership setting policy and strategy to those delivering on the front-line.
We understand the pressures on public sector resources, and we aim to deliver affordable training that helps make a difference to your performance in the workplace.
The National School is a key delivery partner of Civil Service Learning. This is the new organisation set up to build the overall capability and effectiveness of the Civil Service. Through cost-effective learning and development it aims to ensure the provision of excellent public service.
Core Learning Programme
You may have experienced one of our successful Core Learning Programmes during 2010/11. As Civil Service Learning has begun operating the new Common Curriculum – the generic learning needed right across the Civil Service – the Core Learning Programme will not continue. However, many of the courses will be offered by the National School as part of the Common Curriculum during this transition year. Civil Service Learning is providing a small subsidy to the costs of the ‘Leadership of the Civil Service’ and ‘Civil Service Way’ courses. The subsidy (around 10% of the course costs) has already been applied so that the price advertised is the price you pay.
The exception is the Core Learning Programme Fast Stream training. These courses continue to be funded up until 30th September 2011, for Fast Streamers in departments which have contributed to the Core Learning Programme. Other Fast Streamers can access the training on a pay-as-you go basis. If you are a Fast Streamer you can access details of the training available to you by visiting our site.

In addition to the Common Curriculum courses provided by the National School, we also deliver a wide range of learning from training courses, qualifications and e-learning. We also have the expertise to run consultancy projects for you, in the UK and internationally.
All of our courses can be delivered at a venue of your choice and is ideal for when you have a group needing training as you’ll save money. We can also tailor courses to fit your circumstances, your people and their jobs. Organisations across the public sector value working with us because of our knowledge of government. It gives us unique perspective. And as part of the Crown, you don’t need to tender to make use of our services.
