2008–09 draft legislative programme now out

People across the United Kingdom are now being asked to contribute their thoughts on the Government’s 2008–09 draft legislative programme, Preparing Britain for the Future.

The programme, published on Wednesday 14 May, details the proposed legislation that the Government will bring before Parliament in the next session. The Government wants people to comment on whether they feel the right issues are being focused on.

The proposed legislation is grouped under four themes that the Government believes are important to the future of the UK. These are:

This formal public consultation will run over 12 weeks and end on 6 August 2008. The final programme of legislation will then be published in the Queen’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament later in the year.

Leader of the House of Commons Harriet Harman said, ‘Last year, we opened up the legislative process for the first time. This year, we are broadening the consultation to give people more time to comment on and to shape the programme.’

The public consultation is an opportunity for all people across the UK to learn about the Government’s draft 2008–09 legislative programme, and have your say on the shape and direction of the final programme.
