Diversity and Equality Awards 2008
Sir Gus O'Donnell launched the Diversity and Equality Awards 2008 with a clarion call to civil servants to 'go forth and nominate'.
The Awards highlight how diversity and equality make for a stronger Civil Service, one that represents the society it prepares and delivers policy for, and celebrates 'those who have inspired, innovated and worked hard to bring about change' in the Civil Service.
The Diversity and Equality Awards has a role, Sir Gus said, because, 'it is important to celebrate success and translate it into better practice.' The Civil Service is challenged with doing ever more with less, and with changing behaviours and inspiring staff. The Civil Service should aim for a 'virtuous circle', preparing evidence and using the broadest talent to get the best solutions for society.
'To get great Awards we need great nominations,' Sir Gus said. 'We are at times trapped by our character and in the Civil Service are rather modest. We're not used to blowing our own trumpets.' He called on all civil servants to use the Awards as an opportunity to celebrate and promote the best in the Civil Service.
