Civil Service in the news
Volunteers’ Week
Volunteers’ Week celebrates the contribution England’s 22 million volunteers make each year. Many of these volunteers are Civil Servants, whose actions make a positive difference in a huge range of areas.
During the week, events took place throughout the country to raise the profile of volunteering and encourage new people to get involved. A Civil Servicewide group will meet for the first time during the week to consider how the Civil Service can become a beacon of best practice in employee volunteering to make recommendations on how to foster and promote volunteering amongst civil servants.
The group was requested by the Prime Minister and Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell, who himself will be volunteering during Volunteers’ Week, as will a number of ministers including Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, and Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary. On 30 April England's biggest ever youth action scheme, vinvolved, was launched, which gives everyone under the age of 26, including Civil Servants, further opportunities to get involved in voluntary projects.
